Chapter 7: The Bar GÅmh (Abh Hell)
âWho asked you to bring a spare!?â shouted Dohkfoo.
âYell at me if you want, but the guy tagged along, so thereâs nothing to be done,â said the traitor.
Jint nearly said: I didnât âtag alongâ as a joy ride, you know. But instead, he decided to keep quiet and watch how things played out.
He and Maydeen hadnât been tied up, but judging by the mugs of the men surrounding them, he had a feeling it would be wise not to make any sudden movements.
They were in the conference room of the administrative building. There, Dohkfoo and Anguson, and around twenty other people, all men, had been waiting for them (or more accurately, just Maydeen).
In no time at all, the room had made quite the transformation. The tasteful opal-white walls had been smeared with primary-color paints, while bottles of booze littered the floor, along with other stuff the use of which he could only guess. They were maybe used for gambling, but he couldnât be sure.
The second theyâd entered the room, the wristgear was confiscated, and he was made to sit in a corner. He didnât mind not being furnished with a seat â not least because all the chairs, big and small, had been stained and tarnished. There were still a few spots on the floor.
âThis just means weâve got another hostage,â said Anguson.
âDonât be absurd. Do you wish to stir the animosity of the Empire? If weâd just kept it at the Chief Executive, then weâd have kept things internal. But if an imperial noble gets wrapped up, then who knows what could happen...â
âIf thatâs what you think, then release His Excellency,â said Maydeen calmly. âIâd thank you to release me while youâre at it, but I daresay thatâs not going to happen.â
âYou have that right. Releasing you would be quite daft.â Then a sly smile came upon his lips. âUnless, that is, you wouldnât mind revoking the relocation authorization in exchange?â
âAs if I would ever do such a thing.â It appeared as though Maydeen had known theyâd make that demand, because his reply was swift.
âYou like kids?â asked Anguson out of nowhere.
âWhatâs this all of a sudden?â scowled Maydeen. âYes, I do. What of it?â
âI like kids, too. Got five of âem, here and there. But Iâll never get to see âem again. So I want new kids. And if all the broads leave, thatâs no more new kids.â
Maydeen groaned. âAll this, for that...â
âWhat do you MEAN, for âthatâ!?â
Anguson made to punch Maydeen.
âNow, now, settle down,â said Dohkfoo, stopping him. âWhy donât you try putting yourself in his shoes, Chief? That man just dreams of a harmonious family life, thatâs all.â
âAnd if youâd lived good, honest lives, nobody wouldâve bothered to sever you from your families,â said Maydeen. âNot to mention, the people you goons murdered had families, too...â
âWeâve no interest in the past,â said Dohkfoo. âNor do we wish to hear your sanctimonious lecturing at this stage. Weâre interested in the future. A future where healthy, happy children run across the surface of this planet called Lohbnahss II.
